Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)

What is Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)?

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) is a hands-on, clinically proven treatment that helps reduce muscle tension, relieve pain, and support overall well-being. It involves the assessment and treatment of soft tissues—like muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia—through targeted manual techniques.

At Vitals Health, our Registered Massage Therapists in Scarborough provide personalized care for clients dealing with stress, injury, chronic pain, or mobility issues. All treatments are performed by RMTs licensed with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO), ensuring you receive safe, regulated, and effective care.

Is Registered Massage Therapy What you Need?

Massage therapy is more than just relaxation—it’s a targeted, therapeutic approach to pain relief, mobility restoration, and healing. At Vitals Health, every session begins with a short consultation to understand your symptoms, goals, and health history. This allows our Registered Massage Therapists to tailor your treatment to your body’s specific needs.

Whether you're seeking relaxation, recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or require support for a condition like TMJ or lymphedema, massage therapy may be the right solution for you.

Common Massage Therapy Techniques We Use:

  • Deep Tissue Massage – Releases chronic tension and restores movement in deeper muscle layers.

  • Myofascial Release – Gently targets restrictions in connective tissue to reduce pain and improve flexibility.

  • Cupping Therapy – Uses suction to lift soft tissue, increase circulation, and reduce muscle tightness.

  • Hot Stone Massage – Heated stones warm the muscles, enhancing relaxation and deeper tissue work.

  • Lymphatic Drainage Massage – Light, rhythmic strokes help reduce swelling, detoxify the body, and support immune health.

  • TMJ & Facial Massage – Focused techniques to reduce jaw tension, relieve headaches, and address facial tightness.

  • Infant & Child Massage – Uses gentle, nurturing techniques to help soothe discomfort, support sleep, and aid development in babies and children.

  • Prenatal Massage – Provides safe, targeted relief for pregnancy-related aches, swelling, and tension to improve comfort and relaxation.

  • Scalp Massage – Relieves tension in the head and neck, promotes circulation, and reduces stress-related headaches.

  • Reflexology – Applies pressure to specific points on the feet to support overall relaxation, circulation, and organ function.

  • Electroacupuncture (Add-On) – Combines acupuncture points with mild electrical stimulation to reduce pain and enhance muscle recovery.

Massage therapy can also complement physiotherapy or chiropractic care as part of a comprehensive treatment plan at Vitals Health.

01

What should I wear to my massage appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing. During treatment, you’ll be covered with a sheet at all times, and only the area being treated will be exposed. Your comfort and privacy are always respected.

02

Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is needed to book an appointment with an RMT in Ontario. However, some extended health insurance plans may require one for reimbursement, so it's best to check with your provider.

03

Will the massage hurt?

Massage should never be painful. Some techniques like deep tissue or trigger point therapy may cause temporary discomfort, but your RMT will always adjust pressure based on your comfort level. Communication is key—just let us know what feels right for you.

04

How Many Visits Will I Need?

The ideal frequency depends on your goals and condition. For general wellness, once a month is common. If you're recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or dealing with high stress, your RMT may recommend weekly or biweekly sessions until symptoms improve. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your needs.

What to expect during your first visit

Health History Review

Your first RMT appointment at Vitals Health begins with a brief conversation about your goals—whether you're seeking relief from pain, recovering from an injury, or simply looking to relax and de-stress. We'll also review any relevant health history to ensure your session is safe and effective.

Personalized Assessment & Treatment Focus

Before starting, your Registered Massage Therapist may assess areas of concern such as muscle tension, posture, or restricted movement. For clients coming in purely for relaxation, this step helps us understand stress points and tailor your session for optimal comfort and calming benefits.

Customized Massage Treatment

Your massage is fully customized to your body’s needs and your personal preferences. Depending on your goals, your RMT may use techniques such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, lymphatic drainage, or gentle relaxation-focused work. You’ll always be draped securely, and we’ll check in throughout to ensure you're comfortable and getting the most from your session.
