Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a time-tested, evidence-informed therapy that involves the gentle insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to restore balance, relieve pain, and support overall wellness. It targets the body’s energy pathways (meridians) and stimulates the nervous system to promote natural healing and improved function.
At Vitals Health, our licensed Acupuncturists in Scarborough provide individualized treatments for a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, stress, headaches, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances. All services are delivered by practitioners registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO), ensuring safe, professional, and effective care tailored to your needs.
Is Acupuncture What you Need?
Acupuncture is more than just needles—it’s a clinically informed practice that stimulates the body’s natural healing systems to relieve pain, reduce stress, and restore internal balance. At Vitals Health, each session begins with a detailed consultation to understand your health concerns, symptoms, and treatment goals. This allows our licensed Acupuncturists to develop a personalized care plan that supports your physical and emotional well-being.
Whether you’re managing chronic pain, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, migraines, or digestive concerns, acupuncture offers a holistic, drug-free approach that can be integrated into your broader care plan.
Common Acupuncture Techniques We Use:
-
Traditional Acupuncture – Insertion of fine, sterile needles at specific meridian points to regulate energy flow and promote healing.
-
Cupping Therapy – Glass or silicone cups create suction on the skin to increase circulation, release tension, and detoxify tissues.
-
Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture – Targets specific points on the ear to address systemic issues such as anxiety, addiction, or pain.
-
Gua Sha – A gentle scraping technique used to release fascia tension, improve blood flow, and support immune function.
-
Scalp Acupuncture – Targets specific zones of the scalp, particularly useful in neurological conditions or post-stroke rehabilitation.
Acupuncture can also work synergistically with massage therapy, physiotherapy, and chiropractic care at Vitals Health, offering a complete and coordinated path to better health.

01
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel little to no pain during acupuncture. The needles are extremely thin—much finer than those used for injections. You may feel a slight pinch or a dull ache when the needle is inserted, but many people find the experience relaxing.
02
Do I Need a Referral?
No referral is needed to book an appointment with an acupuncturist in Ontario. However, some extended health insurance plans may require one for reimbursement, so it's best to check with your provider.
03
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, acupuncture is safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. At Vitals Health, our acupuncturists are registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO) and follow strict hygiene and safety protocols.
04
What is acupressure, and how is it different from acupuncture?
Acupressure uses gentle finger or hand pressure on specific acupuncture points to relieve tension, reduce pain, and support circulation—without the use of needles. It’s a great option for those who prefer non-invasive treatment or for children, seniors, or those with certain medical sensitivities.
What to expect during your first visit
Initial Consultation
Your first visit begins with a detailed discussion of your health history, symptoms, and treatment goals. The acupuncturist will assess your overall well-being, which may include examining your pulse and tongue—traditional methods used to identify energy imbalances.
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your consultation, the acupuncturist will create a tailored treatment plan. This may include acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, or other techniques, depending on your needs. They will explain the process and answer any questions before starting.
Treatment Session
Sterile, ultra-fine needles are gently inserted at specific points on the body. Most clients experience little to no discomfort and often feel deeply relaxed. The needles are typically left in place for 20–30 minutes, allowing your body to activate its natural healing response.
